DEFENDING THE HALF GUARD WHEN OPPONENT SWITCHES THE HIPS

On the first technique I will start by showing how you have to position your arms to have the control of this situation. Controlling your opponent is more important than learning new moves, without the control things won’t work successfully. To keep my opponent controlled my goal is to always be a little bit on my side and to have my frames in a way that he can not hug my head. My elbow on the ground should always be thigh to my body and with my forearm across his lower back to keep his hip away from my head. The position of my legs are just as important because without my leg ALWAYS over his leg, he will be able to go to the mount. The other leg will help me straighten his leg so I can hook it under to start my way to the mount. Watch how my body was always a little crunched since the beginning.

Second technique is the most common because my opponent normally pushes back when I try to get the mount. In this case I will bring my bottom knee under his hip and escape my hip to the other side to attack his back. At 9:35 of this video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBAkWp_-B0Q ) I use a sweep to bring my opponent back to this position so I can take his back using this movement.

The last technique of this series is when my opponent keeps putting my back on the ground and like i said, if I can’t be on my side, then I can’t control my opponent. If my opponent forces my back to the mat though, he is applying pressure to the opposite side, in that case i will control his sleeve next to the forearm or elbow and use his force to turn my self to the side that he is pushing me. Even though it seems that I am sweeping him backwards, this is actually not really backwards, you want to sweep him by bringing his body to the side of his head, and since you are controlling his sleeve and straightening your arm forward he is not able to post his arm on his side and will fell very light to be taken backwards. But make sure that when you try rolling backwards that your head is turned sideways too so you can perform a good roll.

If you have problems doing any of these just send us a video to our forum and I will correct you. OSS!!!
