2023 has been one of the craziest years of my life. I had significant life changes that honestly left me pretty devastated at first. After putting off surgery for years, I finally had a hip replacement in June. I hoped that I would return to the mats reasonably soon but that turned out to be wishful thinking. There was complication after complication, so much so that in September, I started to doubt if I could ever do Jiu-Jitsu again. Thankfully, my fantastic team solved the problems, and now I can teach, drill, and somewhat train.
Professionally, it has been an amazing year. My gyms have grown steadily, and so has the association. I also started doing more commentary, and although I have a long way to go before I get to where I want to be, I am improving with each event.
As for the team, I hoped to end the year like it started, with Mason taking home a championship. We have been waiting for the match with Gordon for years, and when it got signed, I was ecstatic. To be the best, you have to beat the best, and that is currently Gordon Ryan. Unfortunately, Gordon got injured, so it will be rescheduled for next year and we can't wait! To close out the year, Mason will have a match with Rida, and Yuri will have a match with Nicky Rod. It's good to have the boys back in the gym, and I can't wait for next weekend.
2023, what a crazy year, I can't wait to see what 2024 has in store!
