About the Retreat

More than a training camp. A love letter to Rio.

This is the retreat we have been hosting since 2016 — and the one participants say they still dream about years later. Not because of the BJJ (although that's extraordinary), but because of the meals, the views, the people, and the feeling of experiencing Rio through the eyes of someone who grew up there. Every restaurant, every landmark, every hidden corner of the city has been chosen personally. From guided favela tours to Michelin-starred dining, you'll experience a world that authentically mirrors the varied personalities you meet on the Jiu-Jitsu mats.

  • Caio’s camp in Brazil is one of the best vacations we have ever had. My wife and I have already done 3 camps in a row, and we are planning to come back for the 4th one -- this time with (adult) kids. The funny part is that my wife does not even train jiu-jitsu, but she loves the camp too.

For jiu-jitsu, it is the best. You train 2–3 times a day with Caio, Grandmaster Paulo Strauch, and many other black belts. It is hard to explain, but it is a very special experience.

Food is another level: Michelin-star quality, unlimited, and some of the best food we have had anywhere.

Sightseeing is also not like a normal tourist trip. It feels like VIP access — no lines, no stress, and you get to visit places that would be almost impossible to see as a regular tourist.

Also, Caio always says you will make new friends. I was skeptical, but he was right. We made friends at the camp, and now we meet each other even outside of camp.

The best way I can describe it: Caio’s camp is like an all-inclusive vacation on steroids -- but with amazing people, incredible training, and memories that stay with you

Big thank you to Caio, Leandro, and the whole team for everything they do for us and our family.

  • When my girlfriend first told me we were gonna go to Brazil I didn’t know what to think but I was excited. I knew we would be doing jiu jitsu with the legendary Caio Terra, we’d be exploring Rio, and getting to know the culture. What I didn’t know is that I would be going on an epic adventure and making friends who would become as special to me as any of the other friends in my life. Little did I know that we would end up going on this trip every time it was available form Then on and essentially be planning our lives so we wouldn’t miss it! Yes, the food is amazing. Yes, the training is awesome. Yes, the exploration is unlike any other we’ve ever seen before. Brazil certainly is a special place but the heart and soul of the culture, and the people there are what makes this trip such an unforgettable experience.

  • The Rio camp experience is a grappler’s adventure vacation. Obviously killer instruction, but each day is different from beaches, city activities, jungle experiences, and training at different academies. All the planning is worked out for you, so you don’t have to navigate the nuances of Rio. The food is tippy top but the friends you will make just might be highlight you will walk with.

  • Last year I traveled to Rio for a BJJ camp, and it turned out to be one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment I arrived, everything was handled with true white-glove service, making the entire trip completely stress-free. The training was world-class, but what really blew me away was the full cultural immersion. The food alone was unforgettable — steak with flavors I genuinely didn’t know existed, and the freshest açaí I’ve ever had, available all day long. Every single day brought something amazing. Huge thanks to Caio Terra for putting together an all-inclusive experience that let me focus entirely on training and soaking in the real Rio. If you’re a BJJ practitioner looking to level up your game while experiencing Brazil the right way, this is it. I’ll definitely be coming back.

  • I have attended Caio Terra's Rio Camps three times now, and each trip has been nothing short of extraordinary. If you're on the fence, let me make it easy for you: go.

Caio goes way out of his way to accommodate every single person in the group. The schedule is packed with incredible experiences — hiking to stunning waterfalls, eating some of the best sushi I've ever had in my life, training with social projects in the favelas (a truly humbling and perspective-shifting experience), and of course visiting Cristo Redentor, which never gets old no matter how many times you see it. On one unforgettable trip to Ilha Grande, my now-husband proposed to me at the church on the island. None of it would have been possible without Caio and his incredible security, Leandro, who quietly made the whole thing happen behind the scenes. I still get emotional thinking about it.

But beyond the activities and the jaw-dropping scenery, what makes these camps truly special is the people. You become part of a once-in-a-lifetime tribe — a group of travelers, adventurers, and jiu-jitsu lovers who all share a passion for new cultures and authentic experiences. That community feeling is rare, and Caio cultivates it effortlessly. If you love jiu-jitsu, travel, and real human connection, don't overthink it. Book the camp. You'll come home changed — and probably already planning your next trip.

  • Caio camps are the best. Caio catered to everyone on and off the mats, this includes catering to dietary requirements. He sorts everything from arrival to departure. Training is awesome, people are awesome and the itinerary that Caio makes is always fun. Every flag is welcome at Caios and all ages, 100% recommend!!

  • Caio’s Brazil camp is an incredible experience! Every detail is thoughtfully planned, you get the chance to experience the very best of Rio — from world-class jiu-jitsu training to amazing food and unforgettable activities. It’s also a great opportunity to meet new people and share the adventure together. These camps have become one of my favorite getaways, Caio’s local knowledge and passion make every trip feel unique, exciting, and truly unforgettable.

Questions Answered

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need to be part of CTA (Caio Terra Association)?

No, you do not need to be a member of CTA to join our retreat. We welcome participants from every team and every background!

Are there belt or skill requirements?

None whatsoever. From complete beginners to black belts, everyone is welcome and will have a great time. Our sessions are structured to challenge and reward every single level.

Do I need to train BJJ to join?

Not at all. Everyone is welcome, regardless of BJJ experience. In the past, we have had many participants join who had never trained before — it is very common for participants to bring along spouses or friends. Non-practitioners often enjoy the retreat just as much, if not more, than those who train regularly, simply because they are less tired! When we say that Jiu-Jitsu with us is just a bonus, we truly mean it. People are always remembering the meals, the views, and the lifelong friendships formed — rarely the techniques.

Do I need to get in shape beforehand?

No. Our retreat is designed as an all-inclusive vacation experience rather than a training boot camp. While BJJ activities are available daily, you have complete freedom to choose when and how much you want to train. There is no pressure to roll. For those who prefer to relax during training time, the hotel offers a rooftop infinity pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, fitness center, and beach services.

Who is this retreat for?

This retreat is ideal for anyone looking to experience Rio and Brazil through a local's perspective. As a native of Rio de Janeiro, Caio will be your main guide throughout the adventure — providing an insider's view of the city at the best times, visiting the most exclusive spots in a safe and structured way. Your vacation will be meticulously planned from morning until around 10pm daily. What makes this retreat truly special are the food, the views that no photograph can do justice, and the connections you'll form with other participants and Brazilians you meet along the way.

Gi or No-Gi training?

Our retreat offers a blend of both Gi and No-Gi training sessions. While most Jiu-Jitsu schools in Rio primarily focus on Gi training, our exclusive classes incorporate a mix of both Gi and No-Gi techniques. You are welcome to train in No-Gi attire during Gi classes.

How many retreats have you hosted?

The Rio retreat has been held over seven times since it debuted in 2016. We have hosted numerous retreats worldwide, but the Rio retreat consistently stands out as the favorite among returning participants. The 2026 edition is a highly anticipated return.

Can we create a custom itinerary or opt out of certain activities?

While our retreat offers a curated itinerary designed to showcase the best of Rio, we understand that individual preferences vary. We strive to accommodate participants' needs wherever possible. If there are specific activities you'd like to include or opt out of, let us know and we'll do our best to make it work.

What can I do during training time if I don't want to train BJJ?

Plenty. The hotel offers beach services, a fitness center, a rooftop infinity pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room. You are more than welcome to take full advantage of all these facilities while others are training.

What do I need to bring?

Prior to the retreat, our team will send you a detailed list of what to bring along with a full itinerary and a guide on what to expect each day. We also strongly advise all participants to travel with international health coverage.

Is the Rio retreat held annually?

No. Due to the extensive planning and resources required, there is typically a 2–3 year gap between Rio retreats. The 2026 edition is not expected to be followed by another Rio retreat before 2028 or 2029 at the earliest. If you've been considering joining, this is your window.

Do non-Jiu-Jitsu participants receive a discount?

No discounts are available for non-BJJ participants, as the cost covers a comprehensive experience — the BJJ training is simply a complimentary bonus within the package. At approximately $370/day, the package includes 5-star beachfront accommodation, dining at Rio's finest restaurants with fresh juices and açaí all day, guided tours and entrance fees, all transportation, and professional security. This is genuinely as competitive as the price can be given everything included.

Can I arrive earlier or stay after the retreat?

Although we offer flexible airport pickup and drop-off options, we strongly advise against spending time in Rio alone before or after the retreat period. Over seven successful retreats, our safety record within the group has been perfect. However, incidents have occurred with participants who arrived early or stayed late — including robberies of cameras, phones, and travel documents, and cases of food poisoning leading to hospitalization. For your safety, we strongly recommend staying with the group.

Are there age requirements?

There are no age requirements. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian at all times during the retreat.

What costs are not covered by the retreat?

Costs not covered include: international airfare; visa fees (if required); alcoholic beverages; spa treatments (available at the hotel at extra cost); extra hotel services such as laundry (we cannot be responsible for items not returned or picked up); and lost or stolen items. International travel insurance is strongly recommended and is not included.

Will anyone help me arrange specialized services?

Yes. The hotel has a 24-hour concierge, and our retreat team is always available to help find the best options for your personal needs — massage services outside the hotel, souvenir shopping, late-night dining, and more.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

There will always be options to accommodate dietary restrictions including vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-related needs. Please inform us when booking so we can ensure every meal works well for you throughout the entire week.

What language is the retreat conducted in?

English is the primary language of the retreat. While most Brazilians we encounter may not be fluent in English, a translator will always be available throughout all activities and interactions during the trip.
